Part 1: Interlude

(Shows TjsWorld2011 Pictures logo)
(The screen stays black while Wade Watts narrates)
Wade (narrating): Everyone my age remembers where they were and what they were doing when they first heard about the contest.
(While he says the above line the following text fades in below)
(The camera slowly fades into a view of some of Times Square in New York's jumbotrons, displaying a news bulletin about James Halliday's death. After it fades in, the camera slowly pulls back to the view of the people watching the bulletin on the street.)
Wade (narrating): A news bulletin came up all over the world, announcing that James Halliday had died the other night.
(As Wade says his next line, we cut through various views of people around the United States watching the news)
Wade (narrating): I had heard of Halliday, of course. Everyone had. He was the central videogame designer responsible for creating the OASIS.
(We cut to an Apple store in a mall complex being closed. The Apple logo on the front of the store is being taken down by a man with a paintbrush on a ladder. We pan down to a sign in front of the store in front of various signs saying "FUTURE SITE OF OASIS FRANCHISE STORE", meaning the Apple store is being replaced with an OASIS store.)
Wade (narrating): The OASIS was originally your typical massively multiplayer online game. But eventually it evolved into the globally networked virtual reality that most of humanity started using on a daily basis. It even put a chunk of the other big technology companies out of business.
(We cut to a newspaper with a picture of Halliday at center with the headline "GREGARIOUS SIMULATION SYSTEMS' STOCK INCREASES ONCE MORE")
Wade (narrating): The success of the OASIS made Halliday one of the richest people in the world.
